Elizaveta Barsega is a sculptor who started her artistic journey as a travelling researcher of archaic pottery techniques. In 2022 she opened Barsega Studio Gallery (https://brsg-keramik.com/pages/about) in the heart of Berlin, which serves as a learning centre and a space to explore ways to revive ancestral approach to clay and wild-harvesting of natural pigments.
Defining Holy as nature itself, her work carries a strong intention along with pleasing and intriguing physical shape. The artist titles her sculptural work “Prayers“ and sees them as transformative physical objects, items of spiritual grounding. They are shaped by hand in a sensual and mindful manner that in itself resembles a ceremony, a ritual of being in touch with earth, letting go of an illusion of control and moulding clay.
Traditional recipes of reworking natural pigments and minerals into ceramic pieces laid the foundation for her visual art practice. Creative process of Elizaveta Barsega is deeply routed in ceremonial, conversational approach to creation, abandoning the concept of a master-mind of a creator. The artist rather places herself in the role of support in natural evolvement of the element of Earth into a stone-like shape and state of being through artistic process which involves exposure to high-fire at 1400°C.
Elizaveta holds a degree in fine art and folk crafts. She conducted apprentice work with several traditional potters and evolved her perspective through research trips to Moroccan Desert and Riff Region, Mountains of Thailand and Georgian riverbanks.
